Intent
At Westhead Lathom St James’ CE Primary School, our Science curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity and foster critical thinking in our students. Our primary aim is to inspire a lifelong love for learning about the natural world while equipping our pupils with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for responsible citizenship. We believe that understanding scientific concepts not only enriches students' lives but also prepares them to tackle real-world challenges. By embedding our curriculum within the framework of the National Curriculum for England, we ensure that our educational offerings are rigorous, relevant, and reflective of the latest scientific advancements.
Implementation
Our Science curriculum is organised into a two-year rolling programme that accommodates the mixed-age classes at our school, ensuring comprehensive coverage and progression across all key stages. From the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Upper Key Stage 2, students engage in a variety of topics encompassing Scientific Enquiry, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The curriculum is delivered through interactive, hands-on lessons that encourage exploration and experimentation. By utilising diverse teaching strategies—including group work, discussions, and ICT resources—our educators cater to varying learning styles and abilities, fostering an inclusive environment where every child can thrive.
Impact
The effectiveness of our Science curriculum is regularly monitored and evaluated through ongoing formative assessment practices, including observations, questioning, and analysis of students' practical and written work. Feedback from students, parents, and staff informs future planning and development, ensuring that our curriculum remains responsive to the needs of our learners. Our commitment to high-quality resources and cross-curricular links enhances the learning experience, creating a holistic understanding of scientific principles. Ultimately, we aspire to instil in our students not only a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world but also the critical thinking skills and scientific literacy necessary to navigate their future as informed and engaged citizens.
Understanding the World in EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children learn about Science through the Understanding the World area of learning and development. Activities are planned to get the children interested in the natural world and recognise changes that occur throughout the seasons. The children learn about making healthy choices with food and how exercise keeps us healthy.
