PSHE Curriculum
Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Curriculum
Intent
At Westhead Lathom St James Church of England Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to foster the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, and physical development of each child, in alignment with our Christian ethos. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to lead confident, healthy, and independent lives. Our programme promotes positive attitudes towards health, relationships, and citizenship, encouraging emotional literacy, resilience, and well-being. Through our carefully structured curriculum, we prepare pupils to contribute positively to society, understanding their rights and responsibilities as citizens in a diverse and inclusive world.
Implementation
Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through the PSHE Association's Question Builders Scheme, which provides a structured, question-based approach to learning. Lessons cover three core themes—Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World—ensuring that all statutory requirements for Relationships Education, RSE, and Health Education are met. Using varied teaching strategies such as discussion, role play, and reflection, we create opportunities for pupils to engage with real-life scenarios and develop critical thinking skills. The curriculum is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, with cross-curricular links to subjects like Religious Education, Science, and Computing, ensuring that learning is cohesive and relevant.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is seen in the development of well-rounded, emotionally literate, and socially responsible pupils who are confident in their ability to make informed choices about their health, relationships, and role in society. Our pupils demonstrate a strong understanding of their rights and responsibilities, show respect for others, and are equipped with the resilience to navigate challenges. The curriculum ensures that pupils leave our school with the skills and knowledge to lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives, ready to make positive contributions to both their local and global communities. Through regular assessment and pupil voice, we monitor progress and ensure the curriculum remains impactful and aligned with our Christian values.
