Design and Technology Curriculum
Design and Technology
Intent
At Westhead Lathom St James’ CE Primary School, our Design Technology (DT) curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to become problem solvers and innovators who confidently tackle real-world challenges. We aim to equip children with the technical knowledge, creative skills, and practical expertise necessary to design, create, and evaluate purposeful products. By exploring a variety of materials, tools, and techniques, pupils develop resilience, creativity, and collaboration skills. The curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum and ensures that pupils are exposed to progression in key areas such as Food Technology, Mechanisms, Structures, Electrical Systems, and Textiles.
Implementation
Our DT curriculum is delivered through a well-structured two-year rolling programme, which ensures full coverage and progression across all year groups in mixed-age classes. Each class completes three DT units annually, including one focused on food technology, to promote hands-on learning. Lessons are carefully planned to include research, designing, making, and evaluating, encouraging pupils to engage with the full design process. Pupils build on their knowledge through practical activities and are introduced to progressively complex concepts in mechanisms, structures, and electrical systems as they advance through the school. Ongoing assessment ensures that teaching is adapted to meet individual needs, with a focus on inclusion for all learners, including those with special educational needs.
Impact
The impact of our DT curriculum is evident in the confident and skilled pupils who are able to apply their knowledge and creativity to solve practical problems. By the end of each key stage, pupils are able to design, make, and evaluate products with increasing independence and technical accuracy. Children leave our school with a solid understanding of key concepts, such as food preparation, construction methods, and mechanisms, which prepares them for further education and life beyond school. Regular assessment, alongside pupil voice and work scrutiny, helps ensure that our DT curriculum is both effective and impactful, equipping all children with lifelong skills.
Expressive Arts and Design in the EYFS
In the EYFS, Design and Technology is taught through the Expressive Arts and Design area of learning. Pupils are taught how to use tools effectively and safely. They are encouraged to plan and design their work before creating models. The children develop their fine motor skills so that they can cut and draw well. Plentiful opportunities are provided both indoors and outdoors to practise these skills.
