Languages Curriculum
Languages: Spanish
Intent
At Westhead Lathom St James’ CE Primary School, our Languages curriculum is designed to ignite a lifelong curiosity for learning languages, with Spanish as our focus for Key Stage 2. We aim to provide pupils with the tools to express themselves confidently in a new language, broadening their understanding of diverse cultures and global perspectives. Through the study of Spanish, we foster tolerance, cultural awareness, and communication skills that prepare pupils for further language learning and future opportunities in an interconnected world.
Implementation
Our Languages curriculum follows the structured Language Angels Scheme, adapted into a two-year rolling programme to meet the needs of our mixed-age classes. Pupils in Years 3 to 6 receive regular, progressive Spanish lessons that build on prior knowledge and promote key skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Lessons are interactive and immersive, combining songs, stories, and practical activities that help pupils develop confidence in pronunciation and communication. Continuous formative assessment ensures that pupils' language acquisition is monitored and supported through differentiated activities, while cultural awareness is integrated through exploration of traditions in Spanish-speaking countries.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Westhead Lathom St James’ will have developed a solid foundation in Spanish language skills, enabling them to engage in simple conversations, understand basic written and spoken texts, and communicate their thoughts with increasing fluency. They will have gained a greater appreciation of different cultures, promoting empathy and curiosity about the wider world. The progression in their learning will equip them with the confidence and enthusiasm to continue language studies into secondary school, laying the groundwork for future language acquisition.
