Mathematics Curriculum

Mathematics

Intent

At Westhead Lathom St James, our Mathematics curriculum is designed to develop confident, proficient, and curious mathematicians. We aim to equip all pupils with the fundamental mathematical skills necessary for both academic achievement and everyday life. Through our mastery approach, aligned with the White Rose Scheme of Work, we focus on ensuring that students develop fluency in mathematical concepts, reasoning abilities, and problem-solving skills. Our curriculum encourages students to make rich connections across mathematical ideas, fostering deep understanding and enabling them to apply their knowledge in a variety of real-life and unfamiliar contexts.

Implementation

Our Mathematics curriculum is delivered through daily lessons using the White Rose Maths framework, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum from EYFS through to Year 6. We use a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, supporting pupils in moving from hands-on learning to abstract thinking. Each lesson integrates opportunities for fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, with all pupils engaging in appropriately challenging tasks. Teachers continuously adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring that support and extension activities are in place to cater for diverse abilities. Regular assessment and targeted interventions ensure that all pupils are supported to make progress.

Impact

The impact of our Mathematics curriculum is measured by the progress and achievement of our pupils. By the end of each key stage, pupils will have developed a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts and the ability to apply their knowledge confidently in new situations. Our approach to teaching ensures that all pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, with a strong foundation in mathematics. Through consistent monitoring, assessment, and feedback, we ensure that pupils not only meet, but often exceed, the national expectations, fostering a love for mathematics and encouraging lifelong learning.

Mathematics in the EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Mathematics is taught daily following the White Rose scheme and the Mastering Number Programme. Lessons are interactive and use concrete resources to help children make links between quantities, counting and numerals. We play games, sing songs and practise skills such as subitising so that pupils develop fluency and recall of numbers. Activities are then available in provision for pupils to practise their knowledge and skills.
