Music Curriculum

Music

Intent
At Westhead Lathom St James' CE Primary School, our Music curriculum is designed to foster a deep appreciation of music while developing key musical skills and knowledge progressively across all year groups. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of music by providing diverse opportunities for pupils to experience, create, and perform. By nurturing creativity, self-expression, and collaboration, our curriculum promotes cultural awareness and builds confidence. Music at our school is a vehicle for personal growth, supporting the development of listening, critical appraisal, and performance skills in an inclusive and engaging environment.

Implementation
We follow the Charanga Scheme of Work, which we have adapted into a two-year rolling programme to cater to our mixed-age classes. This ensures a clear progression of musical skills and knowledge from Early Years to the end of Key Stage 2. Pupils receive one hour of music instruction weekly, where they engage in singing, instrumental performance, composition, and musical analysis. Lessons are personalised to meet the needs of each class, providing both challenge and support where necessary. Beyond the classroom, pupils participate in live performances and music-related trips, which deepen their understanding and appreciation of the subject.

Impact
The impact of our Music curriculum is seen in the confidence and enthusiasm of our pupils as they perform, compose, and engage with music. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are able to perform confidently, both individually and in ensembles, and demonstrate an understanding of musical composition, performance techniques, and the cultural significance of music. Regular formative assessment helps track progress against National Curriculum standards, while performances throughout the year showcase pupils' learning to the wider school community. Music at Westhead Lathom St James’ nurtures creativity and teamwork, preparing pupils to appreciate and enjoy music throughout their lives.

Expressive Arts and Design in the EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Music is taught through the Expressive Arts and Design area of learning. Pupils listen and appraise songs s well as learning lyrics and performing for others. Each year our EYFS pupils take part in a performance in front of an audience at Harvest, Christmas and Easter. Pupils have access to tuned and untuned instruments and start to exploring improvisation.
