Physical Education Curriculum
Physical Education
Intent
At Westhead Lathom St James’ CE Primary School, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed with the intent to foster a holistic development of our pupils. We aim to promote physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth through a well-rounded and inclusive programme. Our curriculum is structured to instil a lifelong love for physical activity, while also enhancing students’ health and well-being. By engaging in a variety of sports and activities, pupils will develop essential skills such as teamwork, cooperation, and resilience, preparing them for both academic and personal success.
Implementation
To effectively implement our PE curriculum, we ensure that lessons are taught by qualified staff, supported by a sports specialist to provide high-quality instruction. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, covering diverse activities such as athletics, gymnastics, dance, and various games, allowing all pupils to experience success and enjoyment in physical education. We employ adaptive teaching strategies to cater to the individual needs of our students, including those with SEND and EAL. Formative assessments are integral to our teaching, enabling continuous monitoring of progress and informed planning, while summative assessments provide a clear overview of pupil achievements at the end of each unit.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is evident through the engagement and progression of our pupils in physical education. Regular monitoring through lesson observations, progress data, and feedback highlights significant improvements in students’ physical skills, teamwork, and overall confidence. Our commitment to inclusivity ensures that every child, regardless of their starting point, has the opportunity to thrive. Participation in inter-school competitions and extra-curricular activities further enriches their experience, fostering sportsmanship and a sense of community. We continuously review and adapt our curriculum based on feedback and performance data to ensure it remains effective and relevant in meeting the needs of all learners.
Physical Development in the EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, plentiful opportunities are built into each day for children to work on their Physical Development. The children have activities planned that help develop both their fine and gross motor skills and to get them ready for sitting for longer periods and for early writing. Take a look at some of the activities the children have participated in, in class.
